After the death of his father from tuberculosis, Pessoa witnesses the burning of his father's belongings, the death of his younger brother, and his mother's descent into despair. Over the following years, he attends his mother's second wedding, begins writing poetry, and finds moments of connection with her. The entire story is ultimately revealed to be the recollections of an older Pessoa, typing from his apartment in 1918.
